As another season comes to an end, I look forward to the new possibilities that lie ahead. I would like to thank all of those that have supported Mindezigns and I can not wait to take on the projects for 2012. I have been blessed with many amazing things this past year, but the most of all is my beautiful baby daughter and my continued loving husband. They have shown me so much about myself and what life is really about. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and may you have many blessings in 2012!

New Company ~ Logo and T-Shirt Design

I am pleased to announce the start of the company Africa Motorcycle Tours.com. My friend Tyler is creating steps to fulfilling his dream of opening a motorcycle tour company in South Africa. I was happy to take on the task of designing his vision for his brand. Below is the main logo (top left) and the others are sticker designs created for advertising.

My client had a picture of a road sign that he encountered on his 5 week Motorcycle Trip in South Africa and wanted to incorporate that into a T-Shirt Design and below is the design with some slight changes. Once the items are printed I will be posting the final product.

My life has been on hiatus for a little while now, but I am happy to say that it has been a fun and exciting time. We are back from Hawaii and the wedding festivities are some very fond memories that I will always cherish. I was so happy to be there for my best friend on her special day.

Well in the last 6 weeks I have been a full time Mom. I am happy to announce the birth of our little one, Meliah Lila Myers. She is a blessing to our family. I have to admit that this has been the most challenging yet happiest time of my life. I had never changed a diaper in my life and now I am learning all about motherhood. I am so excited of all of the milestones that lie ahead and enjoying every minute I get to spend with her.

Patchwork Show Overview

The Patchwork Show was a success. Here are some pictures of my booth. The rain stopped by the time set up began and the clouds blew away and the crowds came out. Pre Show Preparation

Preparing for Patchwork next week, I am super excited to show you a preview of some new designs that will be for sale. It's Wedding Season!

It's been a blast getting ready for the Long Beach Patchwork Show, I have some new designs that I am excited to show. I've also been working with two of my best friends working on their save the date cards and I can now show this one because it's been sent out.

The idea is since it's a destination wedding, the card is to symbolize a luggage tag on your way to beautiful Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Congratulations you two!

Wedding Save the Date Ideas

Two of my best friends are getting married this year and they are both having destination weddings. I have the privilege to help with the creative process and design their save the dates. To keep with a beach theme I was inspired by coral, I love the shape and the design freedom that natural coral has to offer. There are so many things that you can do with it and incorporate into design.

The hibiscus flower is also an inspiration since the wedding will be in Hawaii. I wanted to use this flower in a different non traditional way and not something that is expected. The flower is so vibrant and screams tropics and beach. I am looking forward to these new design projects.

Inspiration for design at Hearst Castle

Although extremely busy with projects, I made the time to get out of town this last Christmas break with my husband. We spent New Years in beautiful Cambria and visited the Hearst Castle. It is an amazing and gorgeous place that if you get the chance you should see it for yourself.

Working with architect Julia Morgan, William Randolph Hearst created this dream vision of his home here in Central California. Similar to myself Mr. Hearst was constantly changing his mind about his design ideas. By the time he passed he was only 60% finished with his vision.

The interior of Hearst Castle is filled with all kinds of artwork. He would find artifacts from all over the world to incorporate in his home, such as ceilings from Italy and tapestries that he would hang from the walls from the Renaissance period. At the end of the tour we were walking on gold literally. The Roman Pool had 1" square mosaic tiles in blue and gold (real gold leaf) decorating the entire room, along with 8 statues carved in 1930 by Carlo Freter in Pietrasanta, Italy.

The castle is a magical place and I am looking forward to going back someday to take a different tour and learn more about his design ideas. Here are some pictures that I wanted to share, I apologize that some of them are blurry, we weren't allowed to use flash and the lighting was very dim.

I was impressed by the graphic pattern in this ceiling and all of the hard work that someone had to hand carve, it seems perfect.

Nursery Design

Redesigning

It's been one month now and it's time to share the accomplishment that I spent my almost entire Christmas break working on. I can not tell you enough how happy I am that this job is finished. I can truely say that this was the biggest challenge and hard work that I have ever put into a project, even harder then scraping off 20 year old wallpaper from 3 different rooms.

Kitchen Cabinets after!! Night and Day difference. I am so happy with the way that they turned out. Would I ever do it again? Doubtful. Thank you Lord for getting me through the work.

Wedding Invitation Design

I had the privilege of designing Shannon and Ricky's wedding invitations and table numbers. She had the cutest idea of incorporating names of places or memories that her and the groom Ricky had as they were dating. We were seated at the U.S. Open table and were able to read a little story that was displayed of how Shannon bought U.S. Open Golf tickets and she wanted to surprise Ricky for his birthday so she put a golf tee in a ring box found Ricky on the golf course while he was playing and got on one knee. As Ricky began freaking out he opened the ring box to find the golf tee and was surprisingly relieved.

The duo also sang to each other right after the I do's, it was such a great performance and the next youtube sensation. Such a beautiful wedding and I was fortunate to be a part of it. I pray for many blessings in your marriage you two. Congrats!

Wow, what a busy time of year. I was reminded of what Christmas was about this week from my church service. It is not just about a baby found wrapped in cloths, but about a Savior that has come to set all of us free. Christmas is about loving those around us, saying sorry to the people that we have hurt, saying Merry Christmas to those that steal our parking spots at the mall or those that steal our carts at Target! I am thankful for the life God has blessed me with, a loving husband, a sneaky kitty cat, a house to live in by the beach, a job with awesome coworkers, beautiful friends and family, the ability to create, food in my belly and now a baby in my belly! Thank you Lord for sending your son Jesus.

As we head into another year, I am excited for all of the projects that I will be encountering next year, such as teaming up with my Mom to tackle sewing the baby crib interior. I am happy to show the chair that I finished last week. If you don't remember my before picture I have also included that here. Merry Christmas everyone and thank you for all of your support this past year. May the Lord bless you!

No Power in Words

Life is so bizarre right now. Things that I used to hold strongly to, I’m not sure I hold as tightly. Jesus Christ and Him crucified is my bedrock truth, yet throughout the day we have been interacting with words and thoughts from man. We woke up this morning feeling energized from the previous day’s news. My wife is more than amazing, and as we walked to see Samuel this morning, there was an extra sense of praise from our lips for our Mighty King. Yet what we were confronted with was indeed bizarre.

Samuel was there; eyelids red from a medication that keeps a heart valve open, chest rising and falling ever so slightly from a ventilator, tubes protruding from every angle that seem so foreign and alien to him. I kissed his toes and held his hand, usually my first act whenever I see him. I said a prayer over him, speaking aloud the name of Jesus, as I whispered in his ear my love and devotion to him. Yet my countenance was positive as I lastly kissed his forehead and spoke to him about his family that wants to be with him. My attention, as Kelly then said hello to Samuel, went to the nurses operating the ECMO machine.

“How’s he doing today?” It was a simple question, yet loaded with hope. “Are his gas levels in his blood doing well?” You see, I was just assuming from all of the prayers from the thousands of people that he was going to be doing exponentially better. I was wrong; it seems the levels from the ECMO were raised because the gas levels were not as good as the previous day. My heart sank; literally I was shocked. I remembered too, though, the doctors had told me it was going to be a day to day thing; one day good, one day potentially bad. His urine output was bad today as well, that’s the first step in doing well on ECMO; he needs to have better kidney function and lose all the weight he has accumulated via water.

Words are very interesting when used by certain people. It begs the question to me, “what is truth?” For if the words, “30% chance of survival, doing bad today, Samuel has been doing poorly on ECMO, etc.” have power in them and are truth, then I can truly be discouraged and fearful. That’s right where the enemy wants us right now. He wants us afraid, he wants us discouraged. But really, they are just words. They are just statistics said by broken people who have a very limited knowledge on a few things. But there’s no power in them; it’s just man’s attempt at trying to figure out the situation. Man is not sovereign and his words are not power.

There’s only One who has power in words, and that’s our Creator God and logos Jesus Christ. Christ IS the Word; the very spoken word when creation began. When God spoke, the heavens were made. When God spoke, man was formed. When God spoke, Samuel began in Kelly. When God spoke, Kelly’s water broke and ordained that the specific doctors would be working that day. God speaks, and Samuel breathes. God is the only one who speaks with power. He spoke His Word to us in the Bible, and He speaks life to us today.

So I guess I need to encourage both you and myself right now. Please keep praying for Samuel. From man’s perspective, he’s not doing well. Yet God has him right where he wants him at the moment; he has the power to heal. There are no “bad days” in God’s plan of redemption. But there is the reality that we are called to pray. As it stands, thousands are joining hands for the life of my son.

We need to pray specifically for the water in his body to leave. We need to pray that the ECMO machine slowly lowers and becomes less of a need day by day. We need to pray fervently also that the life of Samuel will be a testimony of God’s grace and goodness. I have been told that Samuel could be a source of revival in certain hearts, and I pray that is the case, but the truth is I am a little selfish. God, I want Samuel. I want to hold him, to kiss him and see him smile back at me. I want to see him run on the beach, laugh and poke fun of his older sister. I want to see him bless Kelly and annoy the heck out of his older brother. I just want him so badly a part of my life so I can share my precious Jesus with him.

Many of you have wondered what it is you can physically do. Sometimes Samuel receives up to four blood transfusions each day; he needs your blood. If you are interested, would you mind letting me know and mentioning it in your response to this post? I will give more information on it later, but for now, please pray about giving blood in Samuel’s name at Children’s Hospital.

And please, please please keep posting this on facebook, twitter, tumblr, etc. Please reference Samuel in your own blogs and send out emails for people to pray. God is doing something; let’s sit back and see Samuel’s life effect thousands.

It's that time of year!

Christmas is right around the corner and if you plan on sending out custom Christmas cards this year now is the time to brainstorm. Along with my full time freelance design job I also have another full time job with the same company since 2002. I get to work with an amazing group of people who all love the Lord. My boss is by far the most amazing boss anyone could ever ask for. I admit that I never thought I would be selling traffic signals when I thought about my future, but this job has turned out to be one of the biggest blessings in my life and being part of the JTB family. I had the pleasure of designing our Christmas card this year to send out to our customers and vendors. Officially today they have gone to print! (sigh of relief)

Art Projects

Today I am home sick trying to get some more rest. I say "more" rest because I am 8 weeks pregnant! I have been sleeping 9 hours + a night, but still feel sluggish and drained. I am very blessed not to have morning sickness, thank God. I am looking forward to this next stage of life and can't wait to make new projects for our newborn.

Here are some projects that I have been conquering around the house that I have mentioned in previous posts. I found this incredible beautiful fabric to make pillows and am happy with they way they came out and bring a fresh new color into the living room.

To also bring some more color into the room I sewed these coasters. I was concerned with the fabric absorbing too much water so I made these coasters out of placemats. Placemats already have the extra coating that you need.

I had a bunch of frames that I was ready to get rid of, but came across an idea to match the candle holders with gold accents on my mantel. I painted the frames with gold and filled them with my pictures I took in Japan and placed them in a organized clutter on the wall. I am very happy with the result.

One other facelift I worked with was in our bathroom. To compliment the vintage pin up poster that my husband and I found at the Long Beach Flee Market I chose to paint one wall with matte and gloss stripes to create the effect.

Now that we are expecting a baby we have to start thinking about rearranging furniture and ideas for the baby room. One of my ideas is to refurnish a lot of the furniture that we have in order to save money and have creative pieces. I found this beautiful chair at the Long Beach Flee Market last weekend to use as my desk chair. I can not wait to repaint and reupholster it. Finished pictures to come..

Fabric Inspirations

As a graphic designer I like to change decorations in my house that I can easily do on my own without any huge renovations, to get a different feel or mood of the space. The fabric of the pillows on my couch have been bugging me lately and I want to update them, but this time I will attempt to make them myself. I was drawn to a lot of the fabric choices at www.sewmamasew.com..so stinkin cute. Which one do you like?

I have been up to some other projects in the house that I will soon share. Gotta put my sewing maching to use!

Nature Calls

It was a great feeling to be out of the city again enjoying nature and God's creation. My husband and I celebrated our 2nd year of marriage at Mammoth Lakes this past week. The landscapes, surroundings, weather, and lakes were all breathtaking. I could definitely live there. Here are some moments that I captured. The sky was really this blue, it was absolutely amazing.

All of the following pictures are of the National Monument Devil's Postpile, which is made from volcanic lava then cooled and formed by a giant glacier years ago. A mix of hot and cold to make these natural organic shapes. I could have sat here and drawn these awesome shapes for hours. Maybe this will have to be my next drawing challenge. To be this close to natural art was a blessing. I look forward to coming back soon.

Another week in the studio

Another project that I have been working on is a logo and banners for a clients' website. The product is a time tracker for race tracks, mostly Pinewood Derby cars. I thought I would share the progress so far.

On a different note, next week will be my hubby and my 2 year anniversary so we are getting out of town starting at the crack of dawn. Camping again! But this time it will be up in the mountains. I am excited to enjoy the outdoors and get out of the city. Til next week, everyone have a great weekend.

Happy Thursday, soon it will be the 3 day weekend:-) and the end of summer :-( I am actually looking forward to a little change, it's always nice to feel that first brisk breeze of fall.

More Artistic Appreciation in Long Beach

Just like I promised here are the pictures of the traffic cabinets found along the city of Long Beach. If you think about it this is the perfect canvas to brighten up the somber streets. I look forward to exploring the city more and seeing what else it has to offer. I would love to have the opportunity to paint one of these someday. Artistic Long Beach Bike Racks

Long Beach is rated one of the best cities to ride bikes, mostly because of its sea level land. I have always admired the artistic appreciation that this city has to offer and you can't really experience all of it unless you are on a bike. This past weekend I made it a point to get out of the house more and get outside. There are these bike racks all over the city that have been popping up and I wanted to share them with you. I have found that cities will usually build these sort of art pieces in certain tourist areas of a city, but these are found through all of Long Beach. In the last picture you can see that in the background there is a traffic cabinet that is painted with a mural, I can't wait to show you some of those next week...stay tuned. Which one do you like?

Reminiscence of Japan

As another week comes to an end I look back on my time in Japan. These two specific photos represent both ends of the creative spectrum of Japan. The first was taken of a Geisha in Kyoto which represents the more traditional side of Japanese culture. The word Geisha consists of two kanji, (gei) meaning "art" and (sha) meaning "person". A Geisha is a true artist.

The second photo was taken in Tokyo in the famous Harajuku District where many young adults express themselves through fashion. Many designers and fashion ideas have stemmed from Harajuku street fashion. I also consider these kids artists in their own right.

Birthdays!

Well today is my birthday, yay! Another year older. I hope to see 90 just like my Grandpa, I made this card for him below. This was his first car that he ever owned, a Ford V8 1932, but he corrected me and he had a soft top.

I just want to say that I have the best friends and family support group, thank you all for making this birthday extra special. I look forward to a great birthday week.

Today is a happy day, they have plugged up the oil leak in the gulf. Although the damage that has been done already is incredible there are efforts out there that anyone can help. It saddens my heart thinking of all of the gulf wildlife that has been affected, including my favorite ocean animal the Pelican. I have pulled a few items paying omage to the Pelicans and those affected by the

oil spill.

If I had my wedding to re-plan and do over I would have definitely included these Pelican wedding cake toppers from Becky Kazana.

These note cards from Paper Ink and Earth were made to bring awareness to the Gulf Restoration and part of the profit goes to The National Wildlife Federation's Gulf Oil Spill Restoration Fund. The muted/antique colors caught my eye.

I absolutely adore this necklace by Crave Jewelry Design. Some of the proceeds also go to help the Gulf through the Gulf Restoration Network.

This Pelican pouch by Old Yarns is cute and is made of recycled materials from the 70's. This influences me to start thinking of my own fabric projects to start.

Here is a drawing that I did a while ago, I am looking forward to my next Pelican Drawing Study.

Every little bit counts to help Save the Gulf and protect the animals from any more harm.

I wanted to add an extra touch for the birthday party that I created birthday invitations for a couple months ago, which is this birthday banner. If you don't remember what the invitations looked like, I included a picture of them at the end of this post. Instead of string or ribbon I used twine to hold the pieces together. 90 years is amazing and definitely a reason to celebrate!

I've had camping on my mind. One of the best places to find inspiration are the outdoors. I was lucky to be there last weekend and I will be taking another trip this weekend as well. These are just a few quick pics that I took. I love the texture of the rocky cliffs. They create so many shapes in themselves. I look forward to getting more creative this time with my photography. The places of these pictures remind me of the paintings of Tom Wheeler. He focuses on realism and the beauty in nature. I especially like his detail in the rocks and water reflections in his stream and nature paintings. He captures the light so beautifully and gives you the feeling that you are there. His skills are incredible as you can see below.

This week's post is about my next home design project. I realize that this is off of the beaten path of my graphic design work, but this is my next project that I am eager to share and get feedback on. Decorating our condo brings me away from the day to day graphic stuff. I'm not trying to say in any means that I have any sort of interior design experience. It's just another way to bring creativity into the home. If you are interested in interior design, you should check out my friends site at Yolksy.

My husband and I have been in the process of remodeling our condo that we purchased a year ago and as always it's an ongoing project. Next project is a Kitchen Backsplash. It has been a lot of fun looking for ideas and the different patterns and colors. My focus is teal based colors to kind of brighten up the kitchen a bit. I have been pulling inspiration from all kinds of designers and here are some that I have come across.

From the Susan Jablon Mosaics collection, this backsplash is different and modern. It brings a funkiness to the kitchen.

This is my absolute favorite of the bunch, I have not seen anything like it and the orange and blue contrast colors look perfect together. This tile is all made from recycled glass at Stardust Glass.

I love these bright colors, it reminds me a lot of Skittles or Tetris. This is Spectralight Dragonfire from the Susan Jablon Mosaic Collection. You may have seen a collection similar to this on the show Hell's Kitchen.

I like the clean lines and the slight touch of color.

I am so happy to say that the mural I have been working on these past 3 weeks is finished. After a couple different techniques with the stencil I found the solution..paint creme! Thank God that this stuff was created, it made my life a lot easier and the letters came out clean. Here are the final pictures of my last project and the church and kids have their nursery back.

Mural Painting in Progress

I hope everyone has had a great week. Thank God it's Friday and have a great weekend.

These past 2 weeks I have been busy with multiple projects, one of which is a mural that I am painting in a church nursery. I was given the drawing to recreate on the wall. I have most of it finished, but next week I will make another attempt to stencil in the scripture that will be above the painting. So far with the help of my wonderful husband we have tried spray paint which was too runny. I have another idea that I will try, but if anybody knows of a good technique of painting in stencils without it running behind I would LOVE to hear it.

Here is a preview of what I have completed up to now. Check back next week to see my progress, God willing it will be finished.

I can't believe we have already been home for a couple of weeks now from Japan. I do have my US legs back, but as I continue to edit the pictures I took in Japan it brings me back to that magical place. All of these are taken in Kyoto.

This is my favorite, they use these mostly for a tourist attraction, but I love their shape and it's a reminder of how things were in the past in that country.

The architecture of the temples are amazing, so intricate.

Konnichiwa! I can't believe the day is here. My husband and I are off to visit Japan for two weeks. We will be staying in Tokyo for 7 days, then Kyoto for 3 and Kanazawa for a couple days. We have been looking forward to this for about a year now. The cherry blossoms are to be in full bloom and I know that I am going to be full of so much inspiration and creativity when I get back. I am going to leave with showing the next drawing that I plan to work on when I get back. A little Japanese influence.

Depending on internet access while I am over there I may post a little preview of our trip if I get the chance. Til then Sayonara. :-)

Roller Derby Pics

We had front row seats for my first roller derby bout, I'll let some of the pictures I took explain the experience. It took a little while to understand the rules, but it made it more exciting trying to figure it out. The OC girls rocked it!

Watching them on their skates and listening to the 80's all night has given me an urge to get out on the roller rink. Maybe soon....

Happy Friday once again! Looks like it's going to be all clear this weekend. It will definitely be a nice sunny change. So Saturday I am going to experience my first Roller Derby match. I met some of the Long Beach Roller girls last weekend, a little vintage..a little hardcore. I am excited to witness their competitiveness on the rink. While I was researching the sport I couldn't help but notice all of the vintage posters and graphics I came along and had to share.

To celebrate my countdown to Japan in t minus 36 days (yay!) my first inspiration piece for this week is the famous "Mt. Fuij Off Kanagawa" Japanese woodblock print by Hokusai. I absolutely love the colors used in this piece. I was searching for a new color pallet and kept coming back to vintage, soft, and soothing. I felt that this piece along with the other images I show below were appealing to me and I wanted to pull colors from these images to use for my next project.

Inspired by scrap booking

One of those Days is a blog I came across that I enjoyed looking through. There is a world of scrapbooking out there and I was intrigued by this woman's use of detail in her work. It takes a lot of planning and structure to make scrap booking come together. I like her use of layers and the vintage feel of her work, such as how the ends of the details fade. I was surprised to hear of a full time freelance scrapbook artist. She has inspired me for my next project. I enjoy her motto which is portrayed in her book title "That's Life, finding Scrapbooking Inspiration in the Everyday." It is the things in everyday life that I look for for inspiration, from a piece of fabric to a beautiful sunset. Scrapbooking is a story put together through images and art, it is like raw graphic design and I love it! Thank you for sharing your work, I hope that others will enjoy it as I have.

I had the privilege to get out and explore the coast that I hadn't been before over the holiday break. I traveled just a little north of Long Beach and came across Palos Verdes which had the most gorgeous views of the Western Coast that I have seen in a while. The sky was so clear that Catalina Island could be seen clearly. It was a beautiful day to search for inspiration.

Ahhh, it's bitter sweet, this is the last post of 2009. And what better way to say hello to 2010 then with another post of my watercolor painting progress. This will be one of my New Year's resolutions...to paint and draw more. What are your resolutions? Will you be doing anything exciting in 2010? One trip that I have planned is visiting Japan for 2 weeks with my husband. I am completely looking forward to the pictures and creative inspiration that I will gain from this trip in the Spring. Wine Label Inspiration

My next project was inspired by my cousin making a suggestion to create wine labels. I know a few couples that will be tying the knot this year and I thought it would be fun to create some customized wine labels for any occasion, my first labels will be for weddings. Here are some labels that I found for inspiration.

1. I like the use of photography in these labels. These were created by MASH Design 2. The customized typography is modern and original made by Hatch in SF. 3. Another good use of typography with a vintage look make these labels stand out from the rest made by Louisefili. 4. This design is modern with a contemporary look. Humming Bird Painting Stage 1

I hope everyone had a great Christmas. I had the best time with my family and being together. It is a memory I will always cherish. I went out yesterday and picked up my supplies to start creating the hummingbird painting that I promised you a couple weeks ago. So I started on it today and this is how far I have gotten so far. I am having a lot of fun and am surprised how relaxing painting is. I am just trying to get the colors down on the paper and then I can work on the details. War Posters to commemorate Veteran's Day

I know I'm a little late at posting this because Veteran's Day was last week, but I couldn't pass on sharing these war posters that intrigued me. I just visited the Long Beach Flee Market today and purchased a pin up poster from the 40's and also looked at a bunch of other old posters dating from the 30's-60's. I found these online and wanted to say thank you for those that are serving our country. It was definitely another time back then.

It's that time of year again! Believe it or not Christmas is right around the corner. Every year it usually sneaks up on me. This year I plan to be ready as best I can. I have already started creating personalized Christmas cards for those looking for something a little different. Here is my first post of greeting cards. Gary Baseman and Cranium

I have to bring up Gary Baseman. First of all he is one of the best entertainment artists of all time. He is a movie producer, painter, toy designer, and humorist. His collectors items of toys are wide known to be thought provoking, innovative, playful, and cultural. My favorite board game of all time is Cranium, who Gary Baseman is the creator of the board figures in the game. You can exchange their pop off wigs or hats to create the character of your choice. I have yet to see his paintings in person, but I defenitely will be searching for his next show.

His "dunce" series is also fun to look for. These collector pieces were made at quantities of 500 each design.
